Edward S. Curtis
photographer
Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868–1955) was an American anthropologist, photographer, and painter. He is best known for his extensive photographic documentation of Native American peoples, which he aimed to capture before their cultures were destroyed by modernization. Beyond his ethnographic portraits, Curtis produced a vast body of work documenting American landscapes, architecture, and wildlife. His aesthetic, characterized by a romanticized and pictorialist style, significantly influenced the perception of the American West. His photographic collection was later significantly dispersed, with key portions held in major institutions like the National Gallery of Art.[1,2]
