Erich Kästner
author
Erich Kästner (1899–1974) was a prominent German author, poet, screenwriter, and satirist. He is widely recognized for his contributions to children's literature and his socially astute poetry during the Weimar Republic era. His first novel, 'Emil und die Detektive' (published in 1929), became an immediate success and set a new tone for European children's literature by moving away from purely moralizing narratives toward more engaging, realistic storytelling. A staunch pacifist and democrat, Kästner was expelled from the national writers' guild during the Nazi era, and many of his works were publicly burned as 'degenerate.' He later emigrated to the United States.[4]
