Esther Hartog

photographer

Esther Hartog (also known as Elly) was a Dutch photographer and visual artist. She met Wally Elenbaas in Paris in 1935, and the two became a long-term artistic partnership, living and working together in Rotterdam for decades. During World War II, she went into hiding (onderduiken) before returning to her home on Katendrecht with Elenbaas. She was trained as an assistant at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts in 1940 but was barred from formal study due to her Jewish heritage. Her photographic work often focused on portraiture and studies, including nude photography with friends and students. Her works are preserved in several Dutch institutions.[1,2]
