Eugène Atget

photographer

Eugène Atget (1857–1927) was a French photographer primarily known for his documentary photographs of the streets and buildings of Paris during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although he initially intended to provide visual documentation for painters and architects, his work became celebrated for its unique aesthetic quality, capturing the atmosphere of 'Old Paris' before it was transformed by urban development. He is often regarded as a pioneer of modern photography due to his meticulous approach to recording everyday life, shop windows, and public spaces.[1,2,3]
