Eve Arnold
author · photographer
Eve Arnold (born Eve Cohen in 1912) was a distinguished American photographer and author who spent much of her career living and working in Britain. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia, she moved to London as a child. She gained prominence in the 1950s after attending a photography masterclass by Alexi Brodovitch, where her work on Harlem fashion shows caught the attention of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, leading to her membership in Magnum Photos. Arnold is renowned for her intimate portraits of Hollywood stars, most notably Marilyn Monroe, as well as her extensive photojournalism documenting social justice issues, including the civil rights movement, women's rights, and poverty globally. Her work is characterized by a compassionate approach that prioritized the subject over the lens.[1,2]
