Evelyn Hofer
author · photographer
Evelyn Hofer (1922–2009) was a German-American photographer known for her meticulous and atmospheric portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Born in Marburg, Germany, she fled the Nazi regime in 1933, moving to Switzerland and Spain before settling in Mexico in the early 1940s. She received photographic training in Basel and Zurich under Hans Finsler. Her career took a significant turn in the late 1950s with her work for Mary McCarthy's 'The Stones of Florence'. Hofer spent months immersing herself in cities like New York, Dublin, Washington, and London to capture their essence through a painterly lens. Her style is characterized by clarity, color precision, and a sensitive human touch. She was a frequent contributor to magazines such as Vogue and the New York Times Magazine. Posthumously, her work has gained significant recognition for its timeless quality and subjective interpretation of the world.[1,4,7]
