Ewald Banse

author

Ewald Banse (1883–1953) was a German geographer, historian, and writer. He is primarily known for his work in cultural geography ('Kulturgeographie') and as an orientalist who explored the 'geography of the soul' (Geographie der Seele). His early works focused on descriptions of the Orient, including Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Turkey. However, his later career was marked by a shift toward more ideological and expansionist themes, aligning with National Socialist concepts of 'Lebensraum' and cultural Germanization of the East. He served as an honorary professor of geography in Braunschweig and Hannover. His publications were often aimed at popularizing geographical knowledge while reflecting the political climate of the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich.[1,2]
