Frits Weeda
photographer
Frits Weeda (1937–2021) was a Dutch photographer known for his evocative documentation of Amsterdam during the reconstruction years. Between 1958 and 1965, he captured the 'shadow side' of prosperity, focusing on urban decay, polluted polders, abandoned car wrecks, and children playing in rubbish. His work is characterized by a sense of transience and melancholy, contrasting with the optimistic progress typical of his contemporaries. After abruptly stopping photography in 1965 due to personal reasons, he spent decades working with his negatives archive. He was recognized for his high-quality black-and-white imagery which captured both the physical deterioration of the city and a poignant sense of childhood innocence.[1,2]
