Gaylord Oscar Herron (1942–2022) was a significant American photographer, author, and artist based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Beginning his photographic practice in 1962, Herron became a prominent documentarian of Tulsa's urban and social evolution, specifically capturing the architectural nuances of the city and the lived experiences of its Black community. He worked as a feature reporter for KOTU-TV and a photographer for the Tulsa Tribune before focusing on his artistic pursuits. His 1975 publication 'Vagabond' is a seminal artist book that blends semi-autobiographical prose, paintings, and photography with heavy biblical influences, particularly from the narrative of Cain and Abel. Herron's work is noted for its balanced visual language, which juxtaposes individual portraiture against expansive cityscapes. His photography is held in institutional collections, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture.[1,3,4,5,6,7]
