George Hoyningen-Huene
photographer
George Hoyningen-Huene (1900–1968) was an iconic pioneer in fashion photography, known for his elegant, pared-down style and sophisticated compositions. Born into the Czarist aristocracy, he moved to Paris in 1921, where he became part of the inner circle of surrealist photographer Man Ray. He rose to prominence as a well-respected fashion illustrator before becoming one of the first photographers to capture the haute couture houses of Paris, such as Chanel and Balenciaga. He served as Chief Photographer at Condé Nast’s French Vogue before joining Harper’s Bazaar in 1935. In 1946, he moved to Hollywood, where he became a renowned portrait photographer for film stars like Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman. He also worked as a color consultant for director George Cukor on 'A Star is Born' (1954) and held a teaching position at the University of California from 1947 until his death.[1]
