Gérard Lévy
author · designer
Gérard Lévy (1934–2016) was a prominent French art historian, collector, and dealer specializing in historic photography and Asian art. He is widely recognized as one of the primary figures who 'invented' the market for early photography in France starting in the 1970s. In 1966, he opened his gallery on Rue de Beaune in Paris, which became a significant hub for objects from China, Japan, and Tibet, as well as rare photographs. A dedicated researcher and connoisseur, Lévy amassed an extensive collection of early photographic works, including those by Wilhelm von Gloeden and Rudolf Lehnert. His work contributed significantly to the preservation and academic study of 19th-century photography.[2,3,7,8]
