Gerard Wessel
author · photographer
Gerard Wessel is a prominent Dutch photographer and filmmaker born in 1960 in Zwollerkerspel. He is widely recognized for his work as a street photographer and for documenting Dutch youth culture during the late 20th century. Wessel studied at the School of Photography in The Hague and began his professional career with the magazine Nieuwe Revu in 1985. Known for his 'cleane' aesthetic, he prefers deliberate compositions using a 6 x 6 Rolleiflex camera over spontaneous snapshots. He is particularly noted for his role as the 'court photographer' of the Dutch rock star Herman Brood, capturing the musician's life and artistic journey in several publications. His photography often centers on the human experience, particularly those living on the margins of society, presented with a neutral and systematic visual narrative.[1,2,3]
