Gilles Peress

Gilles Peress is a French photographer and member of the Magnum Photos agency. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he studied political science and philosophy in Paris before beginning his photographic career in 1970. His work is characterized by its focus on volatile political environments, human rights conflicts, and intense social instability. He has documented significant events in Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Palestine, Iran, the Balkans, Rwanda, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Peress served as a vice-president and twice as president of Magnum Photos. He is currently a Professor of Human Rights and Photography at Bard College and a Senior Research Fellow at the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley.[1,2,3]
