Gotthard Schuh

author · photographer

Gotthard Schuh (1897–1969) was a Swiss photographer, painter, and graphic artist. Born in Berlin to Swiss parents, he moved to Aarau at a young age and later lived in Basel, Munich, and eventually settled in Zurich in 1927. Schuh is recognized as a pioneer of modern photography, known for his documentary-style reportages and artistic portraiture. His most famous work, 'Inseln der Götter' (1941), is a photographic and textual exploration of Java, Sumatra, and Bali, which achieved significant international acclaim. His work often balanced a commitment to documenting the everyday reality of his subjects with a poetic, aesthetic sensibility. Schuh was an active member of the Kollegium Schweizerischer Photographen and was awarded the Goldmedaille Venedig in 1957.[1,2]
