Hanne Darboven

Hanne Darboven (1941–2009) was a prominent German conceptual artist known for her monumental installations that explore the passage of time, history, and memory. Born into a bourgeois family in Munich and raised in Hamburg, she studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg from 1962 to 1966 under Wilhelm Grimm and Almir Mavignier. During a two-year stay in New York in the late 1960s, she was influenced by minimalist artists such as Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt. Her work is characterized by meticulous, serial handwritten notations, mathematical systems, and found objects, often creating large-scale visual representations of time—whether as lifetime, working time, or historical periods. She lived on the outskirts of Hamburg until her death in 2009.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]
