Hans Killian

Hans Killian (1892–1982) was a German surgeon and medical photographer. He received his license to practice medicine in 1922 after studying in Munich and Freiburg. His career included positions at the Institute of Pharmacology in Munich and surgical departments in Dusseldorf and Freiburg, where he eventually became a professor of surgical medicine. During World War II, he served as a consultant army surgeon in Russia. Killian was known for his diverse interests, including surgery, anesthesia, photography, and nature studies. He is notably recognized for his work 'Facies Dolorosa: Das schmerzensreiche Antlitz' (1934), an atlas of facial expressions in patients suffering from various diseases, which aimed to provide clinicians with scientific insights into the diagnosis and prognosis of severe conditions through medical physiognomy.[1,2,3]
