Hein Wertheimer

Hein Wertheimer (1913–1997) was a Dutch lawyer, academic, and passionate amateur photographer. Born in Amsterdam, he studied law and economics at the University of Amsterdam before working for the Hollandsche Bank-Unie. During World War II, he went into hiding and was later imprisoned in Auschwitz and Dachau. After the war, he worked as a corporate lawyer for Philips and later became a professor of law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Despite his professional success, Wertheimer was deeply committed to photography as a hobby, collecting extensive archives and traveling widely to capture images. He is best known for his significant legacy; upon his death in 1997, he bequeathed a substantial fortune (estimated at 22 million euros) to the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds to establish the Wertheimer Fund, which led to the creation of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam.[1,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15]
