Heinz Gebhardt

author · photographer

Heinz Gebhardt is a German photojournalist and photography historian born in Munich in 1947. He studied at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Fotografie from 1967 to 1968, where his thesis on the May 1968 protests in Paris shaped his career as an image journalist. Since 1968, he has worked as a freelance photojournalist for major Munich newspapers (tz, Abendzeitung, Merkur) and national publications like DIE ZEIT, SPIEGEL, and STERN. As a photography historian, he was the first in Germany to research the history of photography in the 19th century, specifically focusing on the Kingdom of Bavaria. His seminal work 'Königlich Bayerische Photographie' (1978) is considered a standard reference in German photographic history. He also significantly documented the life and work of portrait photographer Franz Hanfstaengl.[1,2]
