After initially studying fashion, she discovered photography as her primary creative medium in the mid-1970s. Her work is characterized by long-term photographic projects often accompanied by sensitive, philosophical interviews with her subjects, which have appeared in publications like ZEITmagazin. She has published over 20 photo books and is known for exploring societal roles, power dynamics, and the relationship between appearance and reality. Koelbl works primarily with Leica cameras (35mm) and Hasselblad (medium format). She lives and works in Neuried near Munich.[1,2]
