Hideaki Uchiyama

photographer

Hideaki Uchiyama (died 2014) was a Japanese photographer known for his extensive documentation of Japan's underground spaces and urban landscapes. He spent over 13 years photographing hidden worlds beneath the surface, including tunnels, catchment systems, and redevelopment sites. His work is characterized by an exploration of 'Japan Underground,' a series that captures the strange, often overlooked architectural and social realities of the country. His photobooks, such as 'Tokyo Damon' (also referred to in some contexts as part of his Tokyo-focused works) and the 'Japan Underground' trilogy, provide pictorial reports on the megalopolis of Tokyo and other regions from Hokkaido to Okinawa.[1,2]
