Hildo Krop
author · designer
Hildo Krop was a prominent Dutch sculptor and designer, particularly noted for his extensive contributions to the urban landscape of Amsterdam. Born in Steenwijk in 1884, Krop was the son of a baker but pursued an artistic career, studying in Paris and Berlin before settling in Amsterdam. He became the city's sculptor, responsible for numerous bridge decorations, war memorials, and public monuments. Beyond sculpture, he was a prolific designer of ceramics, glass, and furniture, often collaborating with various industrial firms. His work frequently bridged the gap between fine art and industrial design, influenced by the Amsterdam School and abstract art movements. Krop was also a figure in socialist circles, and his work often reflected a blend of modern aesthetic sensibilities and social consciousness. He remained active in the Dutch art scene until his death in 1970.[1]
