Hiroshi Sugimoto
author · photographer
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer and architect known for his large-scale, black-and-white photographs that explore themes of time, memory, and perception. His work often utilizes long exposures and 8x10 large-format cameras to capture intangible subjects like seascapes, architecture, and historical dioramas. Influenced by Dadaist and Surrealist theory, Sugimoto's practice combines technical precision with meditative philosophical inquiry. He is the founder of the Tokyo-based architectural firm New Material Research Laboratory and established the Odawara Art Foundation in 2009 to promote Japanese culture.[1,2]
