Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein (1930–2019) was a distinguished American sociologist, economic historian, and world-systems analyst. He is primarily recognized for developing 'world-systems theory,' a macrohistorical approach that examines the socioeconomic dynamics of global dependence and interdependence, particularly the dynamics of global capitalism and the role of wealthy nations in manipulating weaker ones. Educated at Columbia University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1959, he became a Senior Research Scholar at Yale University in 2000. His work has profoundly shaped social and political philosophy by providing a framework for understanding global inequality, anti-colonial movements, and the historical development of the European world-economy.
