Jamel Shabazz

photographer

Jamel Shabazz is an African American fashion, fine-art, documentary, and street style photographer. Born in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in 1960, he was introduced to photography by his father, a Navy veteran and professional photographer. At the age of fifteen, Shabazz began documenting his community, influenced by photographers such as Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee, and Gordon Parks. His work captures the everyday minutiae of life, focusing on cultural shifts, youth culture, and social conditions in New York City and beyond. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he has become a significant chronicler of Black American life, with his photographs appearing in major publications like Vogue and GQ, and being exhibited in museums worldwide.[1,2,3,4]
