James Nachtwey

James Nachtwey is an American photojournalist and war photographer known for his unflinching documentation of armed conflicts, genocides, famines, and social crises. Born in Syracuse, New York, he grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Dartmouth College with degrees in art history and political science. He began his career as a newspaper photographer in 1976 before moving to New York City to work as a freelance magazine photographer. Nachtwey has been associated with several prominent agencies, including Black Star, Magnum Photos, and the VII Photo Agency. His work is characterized by its focus on human suffering and social upheaval, covering events such as the Northern Ireland civil strife, the Rwandan genocide, and the Iraq War. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including five Robert Capa Gold Medals from the Overseas Press Club and multiple World Press Photo awards.[1,3]
