Jan Saudek is a prominent Czech art photographer and painter known for his dreamlike, staged imagery. Born in Prague to a Jewish family, he survived the Nazi concentration camps as a child with his twin brother Karel. His work often features hand-tinted photographs of nudes and youthful figures set against textured backdrops or painted scenery, evoking themes of love, desire, identity, and mortality. Saudek's style is influenced by 19th-century erotic photography and the painterly aesthetics of artists like Balthus. He gained international recognition in the late 1960s and has had his work collected by major institutions worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Centre Pompidou.[1,2]
