Jaralambos Enrique Metinides Tsironides
photographer
Jaralambos Enrique Metinides Tsironides (1934–2022) was a pioneering Mexican crime photographer renowned for his stark and often disturbing images of crime scenes, accidents, and natural disasters in Mexico City. Born to Greek immigrants, he began photography as a child after receiving a camera from his father. He became an unpaid assistant at La Prensa at age thirteen, earning the nickname 'El Niño.' For nearly five decades (1948–1997), Metinides worked primarily for the sensationalist 'nota roja' sections of local newspapers, capturing visceral scenes of violence and tragedy. His work is characterized by its aggressive style, wide-angle perspectives, and emotional impact through the inclusion of faces of victims and onlookers. While his career was rooted in tabloid journalism, his work gained significant artistic recognition post-retirement, leading to numerous exhibitions across Europe, North America, and Mexico.[1,4,5]
