Jerry Berndt
photographer
Jerry Berndt (1943–2013) was an American photojournalist and documentary photographer known for his work documenting social issues and conflict zones. He spent three decades based in Boston, Massachusetts, where he produced significant works on the 'Combat Zone' red-light district (1967–1970), homeless shelters, and civil unrest in Haiti and San Salvador. Berndt was a self-taught photographer whose work straddles the line between spontaneous documentary photography and conceptual artwork. He moved to Paris in the late 1990s, where he lived until his death in 2013. His photographs have been included in permanent collections at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, the Centre national des arts plastiques in Paris, and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg.[1,2,3]
