Joel Sternfeld

Joel Sternfeld is an American artist, photographer, educator, and writer known for his large-format color photography. A native of New York City, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1965. His work often explores human-altered landscapes in the United States, including roadside America, recent tragedies, and degraded environments. He is recognized for helping to establish color photography as a respected artistic medium through his documentary-style approach. Sternfeld collaborated with artist Melinda Hunt starting in 1991 to document Hart Island, New York City's potter's field, resulting in the publication of their joint book 'Hart Island' in 1998.[1,2,3]
