Josiah Willem Jos de Gruyter

Josiah Willem 'Jos' de Gruyter (1899–1979) was a Dutch art critic and museum director. Born in Singapore, he moved to the Netherlands as a child and received formal education in London at the Beckenham School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal College of Art. He became an influential art writer and critic, publishing works on Vincent van Gogh, Rodin, and European painting. De Gruyter served as the director of the Groninger Museum from 1955 to 1963, where he was known for his innovative acquisition policy and focus on modern Dutch art. He later became chief curator of the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (1963–1965) before retiring. His autobiography, 'Zelfportret als zeepaardje', was published posthumously in 2004.[1]
