Kees Nieuwenhuijzen

Kees Nieuwenhuijzen (1933–2017) was a prominent Dutch graphic designer and book designer. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where he was influenced by figures like Paul Schuitema and Gerard Kiljan. His career was marked by meticulous design work across various media, including literary pockets, photo books, architecture journals, posters, and stamps. He worked notably with Jurriaan Schrofer and later established his own practice, designing for major publishers such as De Bezige Bij and Bert Bakker. Nieuwenhuijzen is recognized for his pragmatic modernism and his ability to balance complex layouts with clear typographic hierarchy. He was a long-time lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where he taught graphic design from 1969 to 1988.[1]
