Kurt Schwitters

author · designer

Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) was a German Dada artist, poet, and designer who became a pioneering figure in modern art. He is best known for his 'Merz' concept—a philosophy of collage that integrated found objects, typography, and abstract forms into large-scale installations and works on paper. Schwitters lived in Hanover during the 1920s, where he was central to the avant-garde scene, collaborating with figures like Theo van Doesburg and Käte Steinitz. His work anticipated many later movements in contemporary art, including assemblage and conceptualism. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1937, he lived in exile in England until his death.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]
