Leni Riefenstahl

author · photographer

Leni Riefenstahl (1902–2003) was a German filmmaker, photographer, and actress who remains one of the most controversial figures in cinema history. Initially an aspiring dancer, she transitioned to filmmaking in the 1930s, where she gained notoriety for producing propaganda films for the Nazi Party, most notably 'Triumph of the Will' (1935) and 'Olympia' (1938). Despite her association with National Socialism, she was recognized by critics as a technical innovator in cinematography. After World War II, she was blacklisted from filmmaking but continued to work as a photographer and author. In her later years, she focused on nature photography, specifically underwater scenes, which culminated in the publication of 'Coral Gardens' (1978) and 'Wonders under Water' (1990). She died at the age of 101.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]
