Marc Garanger

Marc Garanger was a French photographer and filmmaker known for his poignant black-and-white portraits. During his military service in the Algerian War (1960–1962), he was tasked with photographing identity cards for women in regroupment villages, capturing thousands of faces that became iconic representations of the era. His work received significant recognition, including the Prix Niépce in 1966. Beyond Algeria, Garanger traveled extensively to document cultures and landscapes across the former USSR, Cambodia, and other regions, often focusing on human subjects and their environments. He was a committed activist in the photography community, contributing significantly to the development of professional photographer unions in France.[3,4,5]
