Marjaana Kella

Marjaana Kella is a contemporary Finnish photographer known for her analytical and conceptual approach to portraiture. She explores the boundaries between external physiognomy and internal identity, often using techniques such as hypnosis or unconventional framing (e.g., photographing the backs of heads) to disrupt traditional modes of self-representation. Kella received a Doctorate in photography from Aalto University in 2014, with a dissertation focusing on the 'translations' of the landscape and the face. She has held significant academic positions, including serving as the vice-dean of the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki starting in 2014. Her work investigates perception, authenticity, and the interface between people's internal and external spaces.[1,2,3]
