Michael Ackerman
author · photographer
Michael Ackerman is a contemporary photographer born in Tel Aviv in 1967. He moved to New York with his family in 1974 and began exploring photography as a personal form of expression at the age of 18. His work often explores themes of religious identity, social tension, and the historical weight of places, particularly through his travels to India (Kolkata, Varanasi) and Eastern Europe. Ackerman is known for an 'unacademic' style that intentionally incorporates exposure errors, blur, and movement to convey emotional intensity over technical perfection. He has received significant recognition in the photography world, including the Nadar Award in 1999 for his book 'End Time City'. Since 2010, he has lived and worked in Berlin.[1,2]
