Mitch Epstein

author · photographer

Mitch Epstein is an American photographer and author born in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He studied at Union College, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Cooper Union, where he was a student of Garry Winogrand. His work often explores the intersection of public and private life, human engagement with nature, and social/political themes such as energy production and industrial decline. Epstein is known for his 'mixed-media novel' approach to photography, notably in works like 'Family Business,' which combines large-format photographs, video clips, archival materials, and text to document the demise of a Jewish immigrant dynasty. His work has been held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Whitney Museum of American Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Tate Modern.[1,2]
