Miwa Yanagi
author · photographer
Miwa Yanagi is a Japanese contemporary photographer and artist born in Kobe City in 1967. She lives and works in Kyoto. After receiving her MFA from the Kyoto City University of Arts, she held her first solo exhibition in Kyoto in 1993. Her work often explores themes of femininity, aging, and mythology through staged photography. She is known for series such as 'Elevator Girls', 'My Grandmothers', and 'Fairy Tale'. In her 'Fairy Tale' series (2004–2007), she reimagines the gruesome stories of the Brothers Grimm, focusing on the complex relationships between young girls and older women. Her artistic practice frequently incorporates elements of film noir, theatrical tableau, and surrealism to examine Japanese feminine stereotypes and collective cultural memories.[1,2,3,4]
