Nancy Newhall
author
Nancy Wynne Newhall was a distinguished American photography critic, historian, and curator who was instrumental in the institutional recognition of photography as a major fine art. She is most notably remembered for serving as the first curator of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, a position she took in 1943 after her husband, Beaumont Newhall, was called to military service. Throughout her illustrious career, she authored and edited numerous seminal works, including "This Is the American Earth" and "Masters of Photography," which helped establish the historical framework for modern photography. Her scholarly contributions and curatorial vision were vital in shaping the way museums collect, preserve, and display photographic works, ensuring their place in the canon of 20th-century art.[1]
