Nathan Myron Lyons

Nathan Myron Lyons (1930–2016) was an American photographer, curator, teacher, writer, and editor. He served as a photographer in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he helped establish a mobile photographic reconnaissance unit. After his military service, he earned a degree in English from Alfred University in 1957. Lyons held significant roles at the George Eastman House, serving as director of public information and assistant editor of Image magazine (1957–1969). In 1969, he founded the Visual Studies Workshop, which he directed for over 30 years, offering graduate-level instruction in photography theory, history, and practice. His work has been exhibited in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). He is notably the editor of 'Photographers on Photography: A Critical Anthology' (1966) and published several photo collections.[1]
