Orhan Pamuk is a Turkish novelist and academic, born in Istanbul in 1952. He grew up in the wealthy westernized district of Nisantasi in a large family. Pamuk studied architecture and journalism before turning to writing. He became Turkey's most celebrated author and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006. His works often explore Turkish identity, history, and culture, frequently blending personal memoir with cultural history.
