Otmar Thormann

author · photographer

Otmar Thormann (born 1944) is an Austrian-Swedish photographer whose artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of memory and still life. Born in Graz, Austria, he initially trained as a cook and pastry chef before moving to Stockholm in 1965, where he established his professional photography career by 1970. His early work was influenced by the Czech photographer Josef Sudek and cinematic imagery, characterized by a surrealist-influenced reportage style. From the early 1990s, his focus shifted primarily toward meticulously arranged still lifes using found objects—fragments of wood, fabric, and plants—which he treats as dynamic, associative processes to reconstruct formative mental images from his childhood. Thormann maintains a strict distinction between his artistic photography and his work as a commissioned photographer. His photography is often described as symbolic and mysterious, oscillating between documentary reality and dream-like states.[1,2,3]
