Paul Citroen

Roelof Paul Citroen (1896–1983) was a versatile Dutch artist, educator, and photographer born in Berlin to Dutch parents. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1922 to 1924 under Johannes Itten. A co-founder of the New Art Academy (Nieuwe Kunstschool) in Amsterdam, Citroen became a prominent figure in the Dutch art world as a painter, graphic artist, and photographer. He is particularly noted for his extensive portrait work, leaving behind approximately 7,000 portraits across various media. His photographic work often captured contemporary figures of the early 20th century. After his death, his significant collection of negatives was transferred to the Prentenkabinet at Leiden University.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]
