Paul de Nooijer

author · photographer

Paul de Nooijer (1943–2025) was a Dutch photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist known for his exploration of eroticism, absurdism, and surreal imagination. He studied at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven from 1960 to 1965 under Frans Zwartjes. His work often features meticulously crafted sets and stylised imagery that blend reality with bizarre twists, frequently incorporating self-portraits and those of his family members (wife Françoise and son Menno). He is considered a pioneer of staged photography in the Netherlands. De Nooijer's oeuvre spans experimental film, music videos, installations, and high-quality photobooks, often characterized by a 'joyful science of the human psyche' that balances comedy with tragic undertones.[2,4]
