Paul John Jerome Caponigro (1932–2024) was an American photographer, writer, and pianist known for his mystical and spiritual approach to landscape and still life photography. Born in Boston to Italian immigrant parents, he began studying music at Boston University before transitioning to photography studies at the California School of Fine Arts. Caponigro studied under Minor White and developed a style characterized by its focus on natural forms, often capturing flowers, stones, and snow with an emphasis on their essence rather than mere surface appearance. His work is held in major permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He was also a dedicated pianist, believing his musical training deeply influenced his visual imagery. In 2001, he received the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship.[1,2,3,5]
