Peter Basch

photographer

Peter Basch (1921–2004) was a German-American photographer renowned for his portrait and celebrity photography during the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Berlin to an operetta singer mother and an Austrian director father, he fled Nazi Germany in 1933 as a child, moving first to the USA, then London, Paris, and eventually returning to the US in 1939. He began his career as an assistant to László Willinger before establishing himself as a leading photographer for film stars and celebrities in New York City. His work is characterized by elegance, intimacy, and a subtle eroticism that avoided explicit nudity in favor of capturing the charisma and glamour of icons like Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren. He published numerous photo books, including 'Junge Schönheit' (1964), which featured portraits, dance, and nudes.[2,3]
