Peter Mathieu Martens
photographer
Peter Mathieu Martens (1937–1992) was a Dutch photographer known for his committed and raw street photography. Born in Rotterdam, he began his career in the mid-1950s working for Lievense & de Munnik Foto before training at the Fotovakschool in The Hague. Martens became recognized for capturing the hidden suffering of society, focusing on themes of hunger, poverty, and social injustice across the world. His work was characterized by a sharp eye for human faces and expressions, often utilizing bromide printing techniques to achieve a gritty, high-contrast aesthetic. He received several accolades, including winning prizes at World Press Photo in 1977 and 1979, and being named Photographer of the Year in 1987 by the Stichting Zilveren Camera.[1,2]
