Robert Demachy
author · photographer
Robert Demachy (1859–1936) was a prominent French Pictorial photographer of the late 19th and early 20th century. Born into wealth in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, he devoted his life to elevating photography to an art form through intense manipulation of prints, particularly using gum bichromate and oil printing processes. He was a leading proponent of Pictorialism and served as a director of the Photo-club de Paris. Demachy was known for his painterly aesthetic, often creating works that displayed distinct artistic qualities rather than mere documentation. Despite his success and international recognition—including multiple exhibitions at the Royal Photographic Society in London—he famously abandoned photography entirely in 1914 without explanation. He spent his later years on a farm near Hennequeville, where he continued to sketch but ceased all photographic work.[1,2]
