Robert Lee Sherrod

author

Robert Lee Sherrod (1909–1994) was a prominent American journalist, war correspondent, and editor. He is best known for his extensive coverage of World War II as a correspondent for Time and Life magazines, where he was embedded with the United States Marine Corps. During the war, he covered major battles including Attu, Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. His firsthand accounts provided critical insights into the Pacific theater; notably, he advised President Franklin D. Roosevelt on airing the documentary 'With the Marines at Tarawa.' Following his wartime reporting, Sherrod held significant editorial positions, serving as an editor for Time magazine, managing editor of The Saturday Evening Post (1955–1962), and vice-president of Curtis Publishing Company. He authored several definitive works on military history, including 'Tarawa: The Story of a Battle' (1944) and the 'History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II.'[1,2,4]
