Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was a prominent American photographer known for his large-scale black-and-white photographs. His work featured an array of subjects including celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, self-portraits, and still-life images such as flowers. He emerged in the New York art scene in the 1970s, gaining notoriety for his homoerotic and sadomasochistic themes which sparked significant cultural controversy. Mapplethorpe's style was characterized by an austere, clear, and unflinching aesthetic that challenged viewers to confront provocative imagery. Before his death from AIDS-related complications, he established the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation to promote photography as a fine art and fund medical research into HIV/AIDS.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11]
